LASIK FAQs

If you wear glasses full-time, at some point you may want to consider an alternative treatment to correcting refractive errors in your vision. LASIK surgery provides you with that alternative. These FAQs from Christensen Eye Care in Dodge City, KS provide greater insight into LASIK procedures.

.

How does LASIK work?

LASIK is a surgical eye procedure that makes use of an excimer laser to change the shape of the cornea of your eye in order to correct refractive errors in your vision. Our Dodge City, KS optometrist offers pre- and post-op care for this procedure.

Who qualifies for LASIK surgery?

LASIK surgery isn’t for everyone. For optimal visual results, you need to meet certain qualifications. These include:

  • Having a stable eyeglass prescription for the last year
  • Being free of eye conditions and diseases
  • Having good overall health as certain health problems and/or prescription medications can interfere with your recovery
  • Being 18 years of age or older

After a comprehensive eye exam and a review of your medical history, our optometrist can determine if you’re a good candidate for LASIK surgery.

Is LASIK painful?

LASIK is not painful. Your eye surgeon will put anesthetic drops in your eyes before conducting the surgery. If you feel discomfort or pain after the surgery, we can provide you with a pain reliever prescription. Most patients, however, make due with over-the-counter pain relievers to handle discomfort post-surgery.

How long does the surgery take?

LASIK procedures generally take 10 minutes or less per eye, depending on the correction that needs to be made. However, you should allot time for several hours at the clinic for preparing for LASIK surgery and wait time afterwards to ensure there are no complications before you go home.

How long does it take to recover from LASIK surgery?

LASIK recovery times are quick. Most patients experience improved vision within a few days, enabling them to resume normal activities. Your vision will continue to improve daily, reducing your dependency on eyeglasses for good sight. However, it will take a month or two before your vision fully stabilizes. Our team will monitor your eye health and visual acuity after the surgery to ensure you are making progress and recovering without complications.
